Consumers in the majority of countries in Europe most frequently purchase bathroom and plumbing products from a DIY store. The DIY retailers in France take the biggest share (51 per cent), and are also strong in Belgium (47 per cent), Austria and Switzerland (45 per cent), and in Germany as well (42 per cent). These figures come from the latest issue of the USP Marketing Consultancy’s European Home Improvement Monitor. The rate is somewhat lower in Britain and Poland (34 per cent each), and also in the Netherlands (28 per cent). By contrast, the specialist trade heads the field in Spain with 31 per cent (DIY: 26 per cent), as it does in Italy as well, where the DIY retailers with their eleven per cent are positioned far behind the specialist trade at 27 per cent.
